The Gene Pool
Who we are… v We are families from Chippewa, Dunn and Eau Claire counties with children of all ages who have Down syndrome or other rare genetic disorders. v It is our goal to support and network with parents and families; to assist each other in troublesome times and delight in the joyous times of raising our children. Our Mission… v To provide resources and support for people with Down syndrome, their families and the community. Our Vision… v To impact the community so that everyone acknowledges the inherent dignity and abilities of people with Down syndrome with full participation in society. What we do… v We are here for each other when parents need information, need advice or just need to talk. v We conduct informational meetings on various subjects pertaining to raising a child with special needs. v Recognize and celebrate October as Down syndrome awareness month. v Help parents to access educational and supportive resources. How your support helps… The Gene Pool hopes to raise funds to cover the numerous services that we currently offer, as well as programs we would like to see implemented in the Chippewa Valley. Some of these include: v Offering parent-to-parent support to families with new babies and young children with Down syndrome through visits, informational packets and social/play group get-togethers. v Newsletters which contain information about area activities and services/resources, as well as articles on medical, educational, developmental and social topics. v Social events such as; family picnics, swim party, Halloween party, Holiday potluck, parents-night-out and family outings provide opportunities for individuals with Down syndrome and their families to socialize in a safe and fun atmosphere. v We would also like to have educational speakers present to our group, and to the community as a whole, on various medical/health, educational, developmental, legal and life topics that are associated with Down syndrome. v Recreational programs for the youth/teens with Down syndrome. v Source for current information and referrals. v Distribution of books to education professionals and libraries at area hospitals and school districts. v Resource lending library. At a national level, the donations benefit national education, research and advocacy initiatives, as well as local programs. These funds enable NDSS and local groups to offer services that support and enhance the quality of life for individuals with Down syndrome and their families.
